Tesla Model S Plaid World Record Pass

July 28th, 2021

Who would have ever thunk it? The latest and greatest thing on the drag strip and street is an all-electric vehicle manufactured in the good old U.S. of A.? The Tesla Model S Plaid is blowing the doors off everything with the stones to line up next to it. This video gives us the opportunity to get up close as Chad Roberson takes down the (Plaid) world record during the MITM Elite gathering at the World Wide Technology Raceway in St. Louis, Missouri.

The all-wheel drive Tesla Model S Plaid utilizes a trio of lithium-ion powered electric motors to manufacture the equivalent of 1,000hp. Because the power is immediate, low-end acceleration is unbelievable. The (stock) Tesla Model S Plaid can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 1.99-seconds and turn the quarter-mile in 9.24-seconds at 155 mph. The current world record is 9.147-seconds. Question is, can Chad blast through the 1320 faster than that? Let’s see.

Fresh off snapping a few necks in the parking lot, Chad takes the Plaid in for some roll racing action. Not the forte of the Tesla, the roll race results were run-of-the-mill. Time for some dig racing!

For his first pass, Chad lays down a 9.33 @ 151.34 mph – with the full interior.

On Day 2, Chad showed up with a full charge on the battery and the interior stripped down to the door panels. The first pass of the day is a 9.24 @ 152.2 mph.

It’s Day 3 and Chad has found a lightweight “jockey” to pilot his Tesla for the upcoming attempts. Every advantage counts in this game of thousandths. Sure enough, the strategy pays off. Lightweight new driver, Matt posts a 9.18 @ 152.8 mph, and the crew determines that the remaining interior trim must come out.

Day 4 offers new opportunity and Matt delivers with an initial pass of 9.18 @ 155.7 mph, but the general consensus is that an initial driver downsize may be the answer to a world record pass. Enter Nicole. Could she be the missing link in this formula for success? Oh yeah! Tiny Nicole gets it done with 9.08 @ 154.1 mph. What a day of racing and what a car!
