Junkyard Dog – Pontiac Firebird on AWD GT-R Chassis

July 10th, 2019

When Gregg (lead technician for the Hoonigan Racing Division) decided to build a retromod of his own, you just knew that it would be something unique and awesome. Well, it does not disappoint.

First, Gregg spotted a rusted-out hull from a 1971 Pontiac Trans Am. It had been sitting in a desert (just outside Vegas) for more than a decade. Full of tumbleweeds and sand, the body actually had a river running through it at one time. Gregg pulled the forgotten Thunder Chicken out of the cactus den and took it home to begin its rebirth.

Never wanting to blend into the crowd, Gregg chose to get away from the conventional rear-wheel drive chassis and go with an all-wheel drive chassis loosely based on an R32 GT-R. The rest – as they say – is history.

The hunt for a suitable engine literally began in the junkyard. A 5.3-liter (LS) was located in a wrecked-out Silverado pickup and carefully extracted. An upgraded crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons and a set of cylinder heads later and – kaboom! – you have the beast featured in this video. Well, maybe a bit more than that.

Things like a massive blower, handcrafted front suspension, Corvette Z06 disc brakes, Nissan Q45 front differential and Nissan 300ZX rear differential make this car truly one-of-a-kind. The R32 5-speed manual transmission and R33 electronic center differential are icing on the cake. Oh, by the way, the dash is from a 2005 Toyota Supra. Wow!

Let’s put it on the lift and have a look underneath.
