Ball of Smoke – 850WHP 13B RX7

November 4th, 2017

The Mazda RX7 featured in this video brings to mind an old saying. It says that it ain’t the size of the dog in the fight – it’s the size of the fight in the dog.

The displacement of the engine (76-millimeter) that propels this car down the 1320 (in under eight-seconds), is actually smaller than its turbocharger (88-millimeter). Nevertheless, the combination of the 1.3-liter semi peripheral rotary engine and a single Precision turbocharger produced 850whp during dyno testing. That is good enough to post consistent 7-second elapsed times in the 175 mph range (quarter-mile).

Most Mazdas at the drag strip are stuffed full of some type of LS motor with at least one power-adder. While that is great fun and can yield a fast car, the crew at Bola De Humo (Ball of Smoke) Racing opted to stay with the 13B and build it with a giant turbocharger. The stock chassis has also been modified (by Allegro Racing).

This tiny rocket blows through the competition in the Small Tire Class during Street Car Takeover Topeka. The car is well suited for No Prep racing as it is durable and dependable. Check out the action for yourself.
